Those of you who know my Joshua know he loves bugs. We presently have two Praying Mantids in our house as "pets." (They are both caged in Joshua's room!)
For those of you who don't know, part of caring for a Praying Mantis involves catching bugs for it to eat. (Last year we had a couple Mantids, too. And when the bugs outside were scarce, Joshua actually used some of his own money to buy feeder crickets at the pet store. Crazy, I know. But he really gets into bugs.)
Anyway, the past couple days there have been LOTS of grasshoppers along the path we use to walk home from school. So as we walk, we stop often to catch "dinner" for the Mantids.
You read that correctly. I said we. As in, I catch them, too.
Today as I was walking over to the school I was impressed by how many grasshoppers were flying around, and I told Joshua when I saw him, "It's a feast out there!"
Sure enough, we were catching plenty of them. I was so impressed as I watched Joshua sneak up on them and, with stealth-like accuracy pounce on them, grabbing the grasshoppers with just his index finger and thumb.
Near the end of the walk Matthew and I saw a very large grasshopper and were both excited about it. Matthew called out to Joshua to come and get it, but I waved him off. I wanted to get this one myself.
And...
I caught it!!!
I was so proud of myself. *grin*
We decided not to feed this one to the Mantids. He was too much of a prize. In fact, Joshua set him free when we got home.
But not before I took a picture. Wanna see?

Your blog today explains perfectly the reason God gave me 2 daughters. I get the willies just reading this! Bugs!! Ewwwwww!
But I'm so glad God blessed your son with an adventerous mom who will help him chase and catch bugs.
Amazing.
Too funny! You go mom! The things we do for our boys. I thaw rats for my second son's snake! LOL!
I can tell you are a good mom . Getting bugs for the boy is great. I'm sure 10 years ago you didn't think you would be doing that.Isn't being a mom full of surprizes.judy
I am NOT a bug person. (although I do sometimes bug people).
And what is it about bugs that make little boys, big boys and grown men want to throw them at people?
Once at the firehouse, a few of the guys put 2 bugs in my boots while I was asleep. I don't know what kind they were but they were big and those guys got the result they wanted after I put on my boots to go and do some "random" middle of the night training that they set up JUST for my benefit so they could watch me quickly put on my boots.
You should have seen the look on THEIR faces when I hid in the bucket of the truck and dumped (with help) a large bucket (about 5 feet tall and about 3 ft in diameter, of water on top of them.
There have been no bugs since...but I am always on guard....
P.S. I wonder if the grasshoppers in Spain are as tasty as the ones here in the U.S.?
Eeewe, you are a good "boy's" mom. It was very kind of you to release the Big guy back to freedom. :) But I must admit, even though I wouldn't want to catch the bugs, I would enjoy watching the Praying Mantis' eat them.
Oh... thanks for stopping by and signing my guestbook!
Too cool! Love the ruler!
Wow! Very cool! Too funny...I wrote about spiders today.
Haha! You're a brave mommy. When Matthew and Nathaniel catch stuff I clap my hands and scoot FAR away :-)
Cute post!
come to think of it, I don't think I've seen any grasshoppers here....
I LOVE it! I hope my son stays a wimp and doesn't want to touch bugs. lol :)
What a fun experience though, one that none of you will ever forget! :)
Did you get a picture of the "Feeding"!? :D
My daughter had a turtle, Smitty, as a little girl and I loved watching him eat, especially the feeder fish. It's actually the whole process of the "hunt, and consume" that facinates me. Ha! Thanks for stopping by, loved the comment.
So did you get any grasshopper spit on you?
Man you aer brave. Those freak me out cause they fly off at a moments notice in any direction and its usually right at my face!
lol
Good job mom!
Many blessings-
Amanda
