What's In a Name?

Plenty! If the right Person says it.

I was recently reading the Gospel of John, and was struck by this statement:
Jesus said to her, "Mary."

John 20:16a

Prior to Jesus making this statement, Mary had gone to the tomb of the buried Jesus and found the stone rolled away, and the tomb empty. She ran to the disciples in a tizzy and some of them went back to the tomb with her to check things out. But they didn't stick around, and Mary was left by herself - crying and unsure what was happening. She thought someone had taken her Lord away, and she didn't know where they had put him. She just wanted to find Jesus!
This frightened, crying woman shared her fear with a couple of angels, and then she asked the Man who she thought was the gardener if He knew were her Lord had been taken. That's when, Jesus said to her, "Mary," and her fears were alleviated.

Jesus' statement is the source of my question. What's in a name?

As I read and pondered Jesus' words, I thought about all the things in that name. Imagine this: Frightened Mary asks the "Gardener" where he has put her Lord, and the risen Jesus says to her, "Mary, I understand your fears, but you don't need to be afraid. It's Me. Jesus. I am here! Everything is going to be OK. You don't need to cry anymore."
I know, the only word coming from His mouth was Mary, but - Oh! - What's in a name!

I get that. To me, when I read those verses and He says: "Mary", it's affirmation, and comforting. Just like when we were little, and all our parents would have to do is say our name, give us the reassurance that they are there, and just like we do for our children. He knows our name, He knows us. So awesome. :o)

So much! That's why choosing your child's names are so important. They are going to have them for ETERNITY! We are not given our names by chance even if we think they are (by chance that is).
God knows us! He knew our name before we were even BORN!
AMAZING!

very cool point I also wonder if it was the tone or sound of His voice...I know that sometimes all my kids have to hear is my voice even if its through a telephone line and they can calm down....
